Center History

xxxxxThe TBI Center opened its door in July 1994 due to the awarding of a $480,000 five-year nonrenewable grant, which ended in June 1999. The focus of the grant was to provide services to children who sustained a brain injury, their families and school districts through a seven county region in northern New York. In March 1997, due to grass roots efforts from the local Brain Injury Association Support Group, a variety of services for adults with acquired brain injuries were offered under the Department of Health (DOH) Traumatic Brain Injury Medicaid Waiver program. In 1998 Neuropsychological Evaluations with third-party payers, private pay and agency contracts were added and sustained the TBI Center as the grant terminated. In 2000, services to children and adults with developmental disabilities were expanded under the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD). Finally, in 2001 the diagnostic end (i.e. Neuropsychological Evaluations) of the TBI Center merged with the Psychology Department’s training clinic for graduate students, forming a new center referred to as the Neuropsychology Clinic and Psychoeducational Services (NCPS).

xxxxxServices at the TBI Center are supported via a staff of that has grown to 10 full time employees. The TBI Center also serves as a site for undergraduate interns in the social work and psychology programs. Services in the NCPS are offered through professional diagnosticians (i.e. NYS Licensed Psychologist, and NYS Certified School Psychologist), two part-time graduate students, and one work-study student. The NCPS is both a professionally run clinic and a training clinic for graduate students in School Psychology and predoctoral Psychology Interns.
